- Anaheim Ducks -> John Gibson
John Gibson allowed just the one goal in a 3-1 win over Minnesota on Wednesday. Gibson returned to the form we have seen from him for the most part this season with this performance. The 22 year-old improved his record to 10-7-2 to go with his sparking 1.86 goals against average and .925 save percentage in 20 starts.
Gibson is 2-3 with a 1.77 goals against average on the road, while vs the Caps he has faced them once in his career and took the loss in that game, allowing five goals in the process.
- Washington Capitals -> Braden Holtby
Braden Holtby stopped 32 of 35 shots Tuesday night in a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 26-year-old allowed a goal in each of the three periods, including a power play goal to Boone Jenner midway through the second frame.
He supports a 30-5-2 record with a 2.01 goals-against-average and a .930 save percentage. Holtby participated in Tuesday night’s game following his recent bout with dehydration and registered his sixth win in his last seven starts (6-1). He has allowed three goals in three of his last five starts.
Holtby is 16-2 with a 1.68 goals against average at home and this will be his first ever meeting with the Ducks.
Ducks vs Capitals Preview
The offense has not been present for Anaheim ranking dead last in scoring, potting just 2.0 goals per game, while converting on 19.3% of their power play chances, which ranks 11th.
The defensive numbers are very strong for this the Ducks as they come in ranking 6th in goals allowed, giving up just 2.3 goals per game, thanks to Gibson. Also ranking 3rd in shots allowed 27.2 shots per game (guess the defense is OK 😉 and 1st in the penalty killing department 89.1%
Ex-head coach Boudreau won his first trip back to Washington on December 23rd, 2013, but has lost the last three matchups since, including when Ovechkin had two goals and two assists in the Capitals’ 5-3 victory February 15th
To no pucking surprise the Capitals are out for blood this season ranking 1st in the league in scoring, potting 3.3 goals per game, while converting on 27.1% of their power play chances, which is also ranks 1st in the league.
On defense the caps come in once again, ranking 1st in goals allowed, giving up just 2.2 goals per game and 5th in penalty kill at 84.7%
As good as Holtby has been, John Gibson leads the league with a 1.86 goals against average after making 25 saves Wednesday, however starting 18 games compared to Holtby’s endless list of games he has started.
