NHL Trade Rumors. Philadelphia Flyers Stay Put

paul holmgrenThe shortened 2013 season has not been too kind to the Philadelphia Flyers so far. They started their season as a sure thing for the playoffs. Instead, the Flyers find themselves two points outside the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.

And two points isn’t a bad thing just yet. Look at the LA Kings last year, they got hot at the right time, squeezed into the playoffs and dominated everyone. This Philadelphia Flyers team has the talent to match that.

But they are struggling early on, and against teams they should be gaining two points against.

Offense in particular has been a major trouble spot. Philadelphia has only scored 37 goals on the season. Of course, the team hasn’t been helped by giving up 45 goals at the other end of the ice. Ilya Bryzgalov has played much better than last season, but it’s no where near what he can do in between the pipes.

It’s been a mess at times for the Flyers. Making a trade to reinvigorate the team might be a strategy for some, but that doesn’t look to be the plan for general manager Paul Holmgren.

GM Paul Holmgren already blew the team up in the 2011 off-season when he traded captain Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. And the season before that he traded Simon Gagne. And although these guys went onto win the Stanley Cup else where I can’t see Holmgren blowing this Flyers team up again just to have karma bite him back in the rear end.

On top of this the Flyers are missing two big contributors right now, Scott Hartnell and Andrej Meszaros. Believe it or not these guys are BIG contributors to this team and are dearly missed. Hartnell should be coming back shorty and should get captain Claude Giroux going. And if they can get Meszaros back before it’s too late the Flyers could make a run at the playoffs and not just a semi finals appearance.

So if you’re a Flyers fan (like me) just hang in there and anything can happen. Don’t start demanding trades just because nothing is clicking right now, nothing clicked for the LA Kings last season until a few weeks before the playoffs. I’m still leaning on they get red hot at the right time and become the 2012 LA Kings.
