Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings Prediction (1/1/14)
It’s going to be a very cold and snowy Winter Classic but that’s what’s going to help our NHL pick win.
Red Wings advantage: Detroit is among the least penalized team in the NHL as where Toronto is the most penalized team in the league. Expect special teams to play a role in today’s winner.
Maple Leafs advantage: Jimmy Howard is starting for Detroit and he has been a complete mess this season. Expect Toronto’s grinders to go to work in this game and get pucks past Howard.
For a game that is going to break the NHL attendance record and possibly the all time sporting event record, I can’t for the life of me imagine this game isn’t high scoring. Sure the cold weather and snow is going to be an issue but I expect the cold weather and snow to help us cash the OVER 5. Yes, the over/under is only set at 5. But the odds are north of -130 (still reasonable)
Sure both Toronto and Detroit have been struggling on offense as of late but like I mentioned earlier, there’s no way this game stays under the posted total. Detroit always seems to find a way to rise on national television and besides that, there’s just too much on the line for the future of hockey. For a league that has been creating new rules, cutting down on goalies pads, inserting the shootout to allow more scoring, this game goes over the posted total of 5 on national TV.
Players to watch: Toronto, RW Phil Kessel is expected to be a primary goal scorer for the USA at the Sochi Olympics
Detroit, D Niklas Kronwall has played like a Norris Trophy candidate this season.
OVER 5 (-130 odds) to win $1,000
