2017 Stadium Series Reboot for Giroux?
There’s once again buzz in Philly concerning yet, another captain. Claude Giroux, the next victim, and for good reason. I said it back in 2015, Giroux is not captain worthy. He is not a leader, never will be. And here we are, 2017. His production has been a downhill trend for a few seasons now and this season he seems to be on pace for a mediocre 57 points.
Giroux is the “leader” of this team, he is supposed to anchor the offense. He was signed to a colossal long-term deal, yet, his production is a big problem, easily the biggest issue on and off the ice.
Many fans are claiming it’s the players he’s surrounded by. Really? He is the guy, he is supposed to be the guy who makes players around him shine. When Jagr was on the team, they did have great chemistry. It was magical. When Hartnell was on the team, he and Giroux had great chemistry, it was once again, magical.
Another Bad Set of Trades?
Did letting Jagr walk and sending Hartnell to Columbus affect Giroux’s production or lack thereof? Maybe. But, when a professional hockey player wears the C there’s no excuse for lack of production.
On even strength play, Giroux is 240th overall in the league. Ironically, Scott Hartnell is 70th overall. And, he has nobody but himself to blame.
With all that being said, I am giving credit for Giroux ranking 3rd in power play scoring, 23 points. Only behind Phil Kessel (26 pts) and Tyler Seguin (24 pts). He thrives on the power play, but that’s not enough production from a player with the talent he possesses. He’s only proving he cannot play 5 on 5 hockey.
The stats do not lie….lastly, check out my 2016-17 Philadelphia Flyers Prediction for this season. I was pretty close!
