Washington Capitals vs New York Islanders Preview
Dallas and Washington are easily the best offensive teams in the league and their goaltending is not to shabby either. Washington has a 6 point lead over Dallas in the overall NHL standings and they will seek to gain more ground with the President’s trophy getting closer and closer.
Goaltender Braden Holtby has been the back bone of their defense handed down, then throw in Ovechkin, Oshie, Williams, Kuznetsov, Chimera and company, forget about it. Their offense is currently ranked 1st overall averaging 3.3 goals per game or more.
The Islanders have been that team on the rise, however this season they have been up and down. Which is actually a good thing, teams fly under the radar and the next thing you know they enter the playoffs red-hot, surprising coaches who over looked them.
Although New York’s 20 points behind the Capitals in the Metropolitan Division, they currently rank 3rd, which is a playoff spot. They can forget about catching up to the Capitals but they have a chance of getting to the 2nd spot which is occupied by the Rangers, 4 points ahead.
Bad news though is that another team flying under the radar are the New Jersey Devils with Pittsburgh, Carolinas and Philly right up their behinds. Now is the time for the Islanders to start playing Islanders hockey and that’s most likely why the Capitals and Isles are a pick ’em tonight in Brooklyn.
Washington Capitals Starting Goalies
- Washington Capitals -> Braden Holtby
Braden Holtby yielded four goals on 25 shots in the Capitals’ 4-3 loss to the Stars on Saturday night. A rare off night for the Capitals’ netminder, who was pulled for the start of the third period. Philipp Grubauer stopped all 10 shots he faced and now has a 2.24 goals against average and .919 save percentage. Holtby has given up 10 goals over his past three games, though this was his first regulation loss since Jan. 16. He has a 2.16 goals against average and .926 save percentage.
- Washington Capitals -> Philipp Grubauer
Philipp Grubauer stopped 39 of 40 shots in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Grubauer had no chance on Anze Kopitar’s shorthanded goal in the first period, but he was perfect the rest of the way. He has a 6-4-1 record with a 2.13 goals-against-average and a .925 save percentage this season
New York Islanders Starting Goalies
- New York Islanders -> Jaroslav Halak
Jaroslav Halak gave up six goals on 28 shots in the Islanders’ 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday night. He was pulled for the start of the third. Halak is pretty much your average goaltender. He has been pulled in two of his past three starts, however. Halak has a 2.42 goals against average and .914 save percentage. Thomas Greiss stopped three shots. He has a 2.21 goals against average and .930 save percentage
- New York Islanders-> Thomas Greiss
Thomas Greiss stopped 28 shots in a 4-1 win against Detroit on Monday afternoon. Greiss lost his shutout bid 9:31 into the third period when he was beaten by Pavel Datsyuk. He has been superb this season for the Islanders and he owns superior numbers to Jaroslav Halak. Greiss has a 16-6-2 record with a .931 save percentage and a 2.16 goals-against average.
