What is it with the Washington Capitals every year when it’s playoff time? Let’s brake down a few players that need to step up their game before they find themselves 3-0 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
There is a reason why Steve Yzerman kept Mike Green off of team Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Many will argue it’s because there were veteran defenseman available to play and had the experience. But I am here to tell you that Mike Green is VERY overrated. This guy does not deserve all the credit he gets every season. He gets frustrated way to easily, he lets players in his head way to often than not. And to top this all off he cannot read a simple 2 on 1 play.
For example last night in game 2 of the Semi Finals against the Lightning, Green found himself defending a 2 on 1. As a defensemen you’re supposed to cover the man without the puck and let the goaltender take care of the guy with the puck. What does Green do? He goes directly after the passer, leaving the WIDE OPEN man in this case, Vincent Lecavalier to score in overtime, taking a 2-0 series lead.
Green you need to get your head on straight and start playing smart hockey and stop making excuses for why things are collapsing on you!
Hm what is there to say about this guy except, CHOKE!? Seriously though, where has he been all season and thus far in the playoffs? We see him on the ice, but we never see him doing anything! He is another prime example of the word OVERRATED.
Game two he receives a beautiful pass from Alex Ovechkin leaving Backstrom on a mini breakaway. Backstrom does a nice move getting Roloson down on his knees, but what does Backstrom do!? He back hands the pick directly into the pads of Roloson, instead of lifting the puck UP over the pads!
Backstrom you need to get the butterflies out of your stomach, this is a man’s sport, start playing like a man, that’s if you are one.
The Captain, yes…the Captain. Who in their right mind would give this guy the captaincy?! He is NOT a leader, he is a dangler!
What surprised me the most about his performance in game two of the Semi Finals was the nose picking he was doing while Martin St. Louis scored off of Mike Green’s foot to take the 2-1 lead in the game. Ovechkin literally stood in front of Neuvirth picking his nose and not defending a single man, leaving St. Louis to get the puck and score.
No I am serious he was picking his nose seconds before that goal was scored…ok maybe he was wiping the sweat off of his nose.
Other than that Ovechkin is playing exceptionally well considering the lack of performance from others.
But as far as him being a captain, well that is ridiculous. Watch the next time he scores a goal; he skates out of his mind to center ice screaming at the top of his lungs, with his hands in the air like he is some kind of god. Instead of acting like a captain and grabbing the players on the ice who made that goal possible for him.
Hey Ovie, that goal was only possible because of the Lightning player who had the wrong stick and couldn’t clear the puck and the fact that Jason Arnott made the most beautiful chip pass to you. Now that Jason Arnott is a captain and knows how to lead a team, take a few pointers Ovie, you need them.
Ovechkin start acting like a captain and start realizing you’re NOT god and it takes a team effort to win games
If the Capitals want to be successful in the playoffs these three players that I have mentioned need to stop their game up. And it needs to happen fast before they find themselves down 3-0 in the Semi Finals against the Lightning.
