Looks like Flames fans might just find out, that’s after of course they see how Leland Irving plays against the Blue Jackets Thursday night. Although the Jackets record is horendous, they still have some decent forwards up front that should test Irving.
If Irving doesn’t perform well, expect the Flames to hit the phones looking for a goalie, something that needed to be done in the offseason in my opinion.
Following the trade of Henrik Karlsson (which was a mistake) the Flames have spent the last few weeks beating around the bushes for an NHL-caliber goalie to back up Kiprusoff.
If a significant move needs to be made, and the Flames still have room for three more contracts, perhaps the most obvious trade partner is the Ottawa Senators, where big Ben Bishop is a distant third on the depth chart behind Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner.
Although Bishop could be a decent backup to Kiprusoff, he’s not exactly starting material. And with Kipper in the press box healing an injury (and it won’t be his last this season) the Flames will need to find a decent starter in this very short season. Unless of course, the playoffs are already out of the question?
Another place the Flames could be looking would be the LA Kings, where Jonatan Bernier is riding the bench wasting his talents away while he watches Quick let in softies game in and game out.
If we happen to see the LA Kings mysteriously start playing Bernier, we have to expect they are using him as trade bait and if so, the Flames need to make sure they’re first on the phones.
