Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals, February 24th 2016
Provided by Pucking Hockey Handicapping Service
After playing two games in December, the Capitals are looking to win their third against the Canadiens tonight. While the Canadiens are trying to secure the second wild card spot for the Stanley Cup playoffs, they’re coming into the Verizon Center to face a Washington team that is on an impressive winning streak, and is breaking records with a few more on the horizon.
The Canadiens (28-27-5) are focusing on one game at a time after their loss to the Nashville Predators on Monday. They continue their road trip into Washington with a winning mentality and an overall goal to secure their wild card position in the playoffs. However, they’re plagued with several injuries, including defensemen Beaulieu and Petry. It will be a Canadiens debut for defenseman Victor Bartley, and coach Therrien has not announced a starting goaltender as of yet.
The Capitals (44-10-4) are heavily favored to win the game, and with several records in their hands, every game at the Verizon Center for the rest of the season is bound to be exciting. Washington has won four straight games, and nine of their past 10, with even better luck on home ice. They are the first NHL team in history to win 44 of its first 58 games in just one season, and they’re hoping to add onto that record against the Canadiens on Wednesday. This game could also prove to be record-breaking for Alex Ovechkin, who is just one goal away from becoming the 10th NHL player to have eight or more 40-goal seasons.
The mentality of the Capitals continues to thrive on taking one game at a time, and understanding every team will be putting forth their best effort against them. That mindset has worked well for them so far, and they are undoubtedly hoping using it against Montreal will be no exception.
Starting Goalies Tonight
- Montreal Canadiens -> Mike Condon
Mike Condon stopped 29 of 30 shots in regulation in Montreal’s 2-1 shootout loss to Nashville on Monday. Condon has been pretty good lately, allowing the competition to two or fewer goals in three of his last four starts.
- Washington Capitals -> Braden Holtby
Braden Holtby turned aside 25 of 27 shots in a 3-2 victory against Arizona Monday night.
We’re not even in March yet, but Holtby already has 38 wins. Martin Brodeur owns the single season record with 48 victories and that’s something Holtby might end up besting in 2015-16
