Colorado Avalanche vs Carolina Hurricanes Prediction (1/13/15)
Colorado has not been the team I was expecting this season but I should have known better. Nathan Mackinnon is currently experiencing the “sophmore slump” and Jarome Iginla has not produced as expected for the Avalanche. Actually, either has Danny Briere but I wasn’t expecting him to do much until playoff time, if the Avs can even make it there.
They are only 5 points of out the wild card position but even if they go on a lengthy winning streak the teams above them can still win keeping the Avs out of the playoffs this season. And with how the Sharks and Jets have been playing this season, it’s going to bet very hard for Colorado to get into the playoffs.
The Avalanche lost last night and are on a back to back. Losing last night was huge because of the two points they missed out on. To make matters worse they are still on the road and this time in Carolina. Time zones won’t be an issue for Colorado considering they played in Washington last night. Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves last night keeping the Avs in the game but it was not enough as the Avalanche only score 1 goal.
Rookie Calvin Pickard will get the start in-goal for this contest for the Colorado Avalanche. Pickard is 3-1-2 with a 2.10 goals-against average over his last six starts, most recently allowing four goals before Chicago added an empty netter in a 5-2 loss Dec. 27.
Looking at the other end of the ice with the Carolina Hurricanes, they haven;t been playing up to their potential either. Alexander Semin signed that BIG money contract and has been on a major decline since then. Was it expected from a Russian born player? I say yes for many but not all. On top of that the Canes were without Jordan Staal for most of the season but he is back but now Eric Staal is a bit banged up. But Eric is a warrior and will play through any ounce of pain he endures.
Goaltending for Carolina has been OK with Cam Ward but the offense has not been there. Although recently the offense has been finding the back of the net but the bad news is Carolina still has not found a way to keep the lead and win hockey games.
Carolina will start Cam Ward in between the pipes tonight, who made 31 saves in the first meeting against Colorado.
