NHL Starting Goalies
- Washington Capitals -> Braden Holtby
Braden Holtby was brilliant in Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Flyers. He made 33 of the 35 saves asked of him, including all 10 asked of him on special teams. Holtby has now won his last four decisions, including three straight with only two goals against. His record is now up to 33-5-2 on the season.
Holtby is also 15-5 with a 2.13 goals against average on the road, while vs the Preds in his career he has gone 1-1 with a 4.05 goals against average.
- Nashville Predators -> Pekka Rinne
Pekka Rinne yielded two goals on 30 shots in the Predators’ 6-2 win against the Sharks on Saturday night. Rinne is starting to turn the corner. Even after a poor outing against the Flyers in his previous game, he has now posted a save percentage of at least .933 in five of his past six games. The Predators are good enough to make a run in the West, but their goaltending and goal scoring from forwards has been sub par. Rinne has a 2.50 goals against average and .904 SV%
Rinne is 13-11 with a 2.25 goals against average at home, while vs the Caps in his career he has gone 2-0 with a 2.00 goals against average.
Capitals vs Predators Preview
Washington impressively rank first overall in scoring, potting 3.3 goals per game and ranks first overall in the power play department, converting on 24.4% of their chances. Safe bet to say, the Caps are not showing any signs of slowing down on offense?
At the defensive side of the barn they also impressively rank second overall in goals allowed, only allowing 2.2 goals per game. Their defense is solid but it’s Braden Holtby who takes the credit for the 2nd overall ranking.
Nashville ranks 18th overall in scoring and have not been all that consistent on offense barely scoring 2.6 goals per game. The main reason they gave up Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen. The Preds also rank okay at 12th in the power play department allowing teams to convert on 19.5% of their chances.
Their defense is sold, there’s no if and’s or but’s about that. It’s Pekka Rinne’s struggles so far this season on why they rank 16th overall in goals allowed giving up 2.6 goals per game. And that 2.6 goals per game stat doesn’t really show how bad Rinne has been this season. Not Rinne like.
Make matters worse, the Predators rank an awful 24th overall in the penalty killing department…
- 10-2 in their last 12 games in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation
- 50-19 in their last 69 games playing on one days rest
- 5-14 in their last 19 games following a win
- 3-14 in their last 17 games after scoring five goals or more in their previous game
