During that ’72 trip, the Bruins outscored Philadelphia, Minnesota, Chicago, Vancouver, California, and Los Angeles, by a collective 30-19. The Big Bad Bruins were in their sunset seasons by then, even if they didn’t know it.
They wrapped up that ’72 trip with a 5-4 edging of the Kings at the Forum Feb. 26, and less than 90 days later marched around Madison Square Garden with the Stanley Cup.
Now, with the Bruins only sitting 3 points out of first in the East, Flyers 86 points – Bruins 83 points, they have been a scary pucking hockey team as of late.
The recent acquisitions of Chris Kelly, Rich Peverley, and Tomas Kaberle lifted an almost dreadful season at a critical time. Another huge key of late has been Tuukka Rask, who sat for long stretches much of this season. Rask ended up with four of the wins on the trip, twice winning in back-to-back starts.
So I ask are the Bruins a team to look out for with less than 18 games left in the regular season.
Uh, pucken right they are a team to watch out for. That’s like me asking if Charlie Sheen is one funny mother pucker! #winning
Every team in the East needs to keep their eyes, not eye, on this scary Bruins team, especially the Philadelphia Flyers, who are currently first in the East, but only by 3 points. With the Flyers slipping, and the Bruins clicking, the Bruins can easily take over that number 1 spot and have home ice advantage come playoff time. It is time Danny Briere and Calude Giroux think twice about pitching and catching while living together, if they want that home ice advantage to keep up with their life style.
It’s a safe bet to say without Tim Thomas they would not be in the top 5 of the east. Thomas, number one in save percentage (.940) number one in goals against (1.95) and number two in shutouts (7). Thomas has carried this Bruins team for most of the season; does he have anything left in the tank come playoff time?
With the recent acquisitions of Kelly, Peverley, and Kaberle, Thomas will have plenty left in the tank. Kelly has already notched 2 points in a Bruins uniform, Peverley has also notched 2 points and as for Kaberle he is already a +3 rating with one assist for the Bruins.
Everything seems to be working for the Bruins right now but that can all change come playoff time. Emotions can get the best of a hockey player and team. We all saw that last season when the Bruins blew a 3-0 semifinals conference lead to the Flyers. Maybe they were taking lessons from their younger sisters at the time.
With all this said. Expect the Bruins to finish first in the East with how things are going as of late. It is a good time to be a Bruins fan if you are one, me personally, I am by far NOT a Bruins fan.
