Tonight here at Pucking Hockey we have a free NHL picks between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. Here is my reasoning for backing the road underdog, Detroit Red Wings.
Before the Western semifinals started in the NHL we predicted the Detroit Red Wings to advance over the Chicago Blackhawks in 7 games.
Chicago took the first game, then Detroit took the next 3 including one in Chicago. And as the new saying goes “you don’t lose a series until you lose at home”. I sat back on my couch and just smiled when I preached to all of my friends that Detroit would beat the mighty Hawks and a 3-1 series lead made me look like a genius.
Since then though, I have watched two games go in Chicago’s favor. The last one going to Chicago thanks to the referees calling a penalty shot on a very questionable “slash”. Let’s just say Frolik’s embellishment will never be forgotten!
Well, here we are with a 3-3 series tie and game 7 will take place in Chicago where the fans will be loud, very loud.
Both Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews finally scored their first goal of the postseason (yeah, their first) and finally Toews has been the leader we all know he can be. But now all the pressure is on Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Datsyuk has just 2 assists in the series while Zetterberg has no goals.
If Detroit is going to win this game 7 their top players of Datsyuk and Zetterberg will have to step up their game like they did when they trailed the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Datsyuk had a goal and two assists in Game 6 of that series, and Zetterberg collected three goals and two assists in the final two games against the Ducks.
Not only that, they need to get back to the basics. All season Detroit has worked hard and played very physical against Chicago. A few lucky bounces in Chicago’s favor just happened to be the nail in the coffin, tonight though, I back Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings.
Game 7 prediction
I have said it all this time, Mike Babcock is the best coach in the NHL and he can grab any group of players to buy into his system and win hockey games. Detroit is the younger team, yes, but they have the heart and will to win.
The only problem is, can Detroit get past not just this dangerous Hawks team but this loud crowd at United Center?
We originally predicted the Wings to win in 7 and here we are in a game 7, and I would be crazy to go back on my original prediction. I’m not feeling to hot about this pick as Chicago has found their game. But for what the odds are worth it’s worth the small risk especially since the Hawks are a -197 home favorite.
What I do like though, I’m not the only one backing the Red Wings tonight. The Hawks opened as a -230 home favorite and are now a -197 home favorite. Take Detroit’s underdog value and don’t look back.
Detroit Red Wings to win +182 (risking $100 to win $182)
