LA managed to score 4 goals vs Columbus – no surprise – then go to Nashville and throw 32 shots on Pekka Rinne and skate away with zero goals. They only gave up 14 shots to the Predators, and lost the game 3-0. Good news is, they’re getting shots on net, the problem is the puck isn’t going in the net.
Well, playing against a banged up Red Wings team the Kings may finally get some goals out of this game and even skate away with a win on national television.
After the loss in Nashville the Kings actually stayed in Nashville and had practice before leaving. Head coach Sutter shook up the lines hoping to spark some offense. Even though they are producing on offense, they’re just not getting into the slot and causing a distraction on the goalie.
The key for the Kings to win this game today will start at the face-off circle against the Red Wings. Winning the draws today will be a HUGE factor in the final score of this game along with staying OUT of the penalty box.
Detroit dominated the Oilers yesterday on the face-off’s problem though is, well to me, they only scored 2 goals. Detroit won 33 face-offs to Edmonton’s 17. When an NHL team racks up that many face-off wins, they should skate away with more than 2 goals in a game. Winning a face-off in hockey gives you the automatic edge in terms of offense, especially when the draw is in your opponent’s end of the ice.
If the Kings can stay out of the box and win those very important face-offs, there’s no reason why they can’t win today. The Wings played yesterday, the Kings had off and are well rested. Jimmy Howard better have his A game on, because he will see at least 30 shots this game, and his .897 SV % won’t be able to handle it.
Speaking of a .897 SV % – Jonathan Quick’s SV% isn’t much better sitting currently at .889, good news though is recently acquired Keaton Ellerby should help Quick. He’s a big body and will be paired with Drew Doughty in today’s game.
I’m not saying this will be a cake walk for the Kings, it may take all 3 periods before the Kings finally take the first lead of the game. But what I do know is, this game will go over the posted total goals of 5. Expect a 4-3 Kings victory
LA Kings – Jonathan Quick
Detroit Red Wings – Jimmy Howard
