The rivalry between the Boston and Buffalo has been growing more and more intense ever since Milan Lucic ran over Ryan Miller. The Sabres beefed up in the off-season and unleashed they’re most potent pugilist, John Scott, in their first meeting of the season.
Scott’s dismantling of Shawn Thornton inspired the Sabres to victory in that game, but Buffalo didn’t fair so well in their second meeting against the North East leading Bruins. Played less than a week ago, Boston beat Buffalo in a tight 3-1 game with the last goal into the empty net.
I expected the first game between these two rivals to look more like an old Broad Street Bullies game from the 70’s. But with only one fight in that game, and one fight between Pat Kaleta and Gregory Campbell in the second meeting between these two, one might think that this rivalry isn’t going to be as bloody as everyone expected.
I think that changes tonight. I think the fact that these two teams are playing twice in a week will make this game slightly more violent. Also, Buffalo played one of their best offensive games following the John Scott fight in their first meeting with the Bruins. I think Buffalo might be pushing more for a fight happy game, especially in the first 30 minutes.
While we may see a rematch of middle weights Kaleta and Campbell I think it’s more likely that we see Milan Lucic and tough guy Steve Ott square off early in this one. Maybe we see a bout between John Scott and Zdeno Chara, but I don’t think Chara will take himself off the ice in such an important game.
Unless Buffalo get’s a real boost from winning a couple early fights I don’t see this one going much different than their meeting Sunday night. “The Dreidel” Anton Khudobin is back in net for the Bruins. Khudobin held Buffalo to only one goal in their last meeting. A struggling Sabres team might have trouble manufacturing goals against this tough Bruins team.
Boston Bruins – Anton Khudobin
Buffalo Sabres – Ryan Miller
