In this rescheduled snow day game, the Penguins and the Capitals will both be looking to come out ahead in a split series where each team has won two games. The Penguins are playing a back-to-back, after winning against the Coyotes with an impressive 6-0 on Monday, and coming into Washington against a Capitals team that lost to the Blackhawks on Sunday.
The Penguins (32-21-8) are 3-1-1 in their past five road games, but are hoping they’ve finally mastered the art of starting early and finishing strong. Forward Patric Hornqvist scored his first NHL hat trick on Monday, and recognized that “Tonight we had a better start, leading to a good game. That’s going to be the key here moving forward.” If the Penguins can capitalize on starting strong right in the first period, there’s a chance they can get the upper hand on a Washington team that outranks them statistically, and has been consistently trading and acquiring new players.
The Capitals (45-12-4) have never lost two consecutive games in regulation this season, and they’ll be playing on their home ice tonight after losing to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Whether that offers them confidence or pressure is yet to be determined. They are 12-4-1 in their past 17 games, but are still utilizing their trade options up until the deadline.
Just Sunday, they obtained forward Daniel Winnik from the Maple Leafs, and both Winnik and coach Trotz think the former Leaf will be a great addition to the team. Whether he’ll be an additional winning piece, and ensure Washington stays on their no consecutive loss streak will be determined tonight.
- Pittsburgh Penguins -> Marc-Andre Fleury
Marc-Andre Fleury earned a 30-save shutout in a 6-0 win against Arizona Monday night. Fleury has now won four of his last five starts, bringing his record up to 26-14-6 this season. This is also his fifth shutout of the season and his 43rd of his career. He’s now tied with Gump Worsley for 31st place on the all-time shutout list and Fleury needs just one more to reach Miikka Kiprusoff’s career total.
- Washington Capitals -> Braden Holtby
Braden Holtby suffered only the 10th loss, seventh in regulation, of the season on Sunday 3-2 to Chicago. Holtby turned away 20 of 23 shots, including four of five on special teams during the effort. He continues to sit just one win shy of 40
