If it weren’t for Devan Dubyk, the Minnesota Wild would be bottom feeders and Mike Yeo would have most likely been fired.
Most of the time it takes someone to hit rock bottom before they realize they’re doing something wrong and it’s time to fix it. Not everyone understands that concept, but apparently Devan Dubnyk does.
After allowing 6 goals to the Washington Capitals back on November 2nd while playing for the Arionza Coyotes, goaltending coach Sean Burke pulled Dubnky into the video room and put him on blast.
Burke showed him how awful he looked out there, Dubnyk altered his style and has been absolutely stellar ever since. For the Coyotes and now the Minnesota Wild.
Burke convinced Dubnyk to play deeper in net and said: “No matter what, I want you to be set every single play. And man, just such a small, simple thing and all of a sudden you’re there ahead of stuff. It allows you to get your eyes on the puck and you’re ready and if bodies come in front, you’re already there, so you shift and find lanes that if you’re still moving you let yourself get screened on. All of a sudden, you feel big and patient and everything kind of comes after that.”
Dubnyk has a 1.65 goals-against average, .937 save percentage and five shutouts for the Wild. He ranks third in the NHL with a 2.14 GAA and fifth with a .926 save percentage between Arizona and the Wild.
However, tonight 3/5/15 he will face the team who dismantled him before Dubnky made a change. I guess you can call this a “redemption” game for Dubnyk tonight in Washington. Going up against Alex Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom won’t be an easy task to do.
Ovechkin and Backstrom are tied for the NHL lead with 67 points apiece. Ovechkin leads with 43 goals, 19 power-play goals and 10-game winning goals. Backstrom leads with 49 assists. Not that this pertains to this match-up tonight, I am very bitter Patrick Kane is done for the season. He was on track for being the first American born player to win the Art Ross Trophy.
I would have been one happy American. Anyways….
I always knew Sean Burke is the best goaltending coach in the league and he makes average goaltenders shine, but I never knew he was part of Dubnyk’s recent success. I found out about this by Minnesota’s columnist Michael Russo. Be sure to read his article, he goes into more detail about the situation. Enjoy.
