Standing at barely 5′ 8″ and 150 pounds soak and wet, golf clubs for arms, American born Johnny Gaudreau had a remarkable rookie season.
In the 2013-2014 season Johnny Hockey played one game for Calgary and managed to score a goal and finish the game with 1 +1 rating. Then the 2014-2015 NHL season Gaudreau played in 81 games totaling 24 goals and 40 assists finishing with a total of 64 points. And since that wasn’t enough, he also ended the regular season with a +11 rating.
And yes, he is still only 5′ 8″ and 150 pounds
This Calgary team has been built on young talent and mark my words, they will be a force out in the West for the next 5+ years. Don’t believe me? This young unexperienced Flames squad made it to the 2nd round of the 2015 NHL playoffs and yes, Johnny Hockey led the way.
In 11 playoff games, his first playoff experience, Gaudreau scored 4 goals and totaled 5 assists. That’s a total of 9 points in 11 games. A playoff atmosphere that involves tight defensive schemes and a very physical game style. Gaudreau shined in the Vancouver series totaling 6 points, however struggled in the Anaheim series, until he forced OT which eventually led to the Flames lone win.
In 5 games against Anaheim, Gaudreau managed to score 2 goals and 1 assist. In my book for a rookie, that’s remarkable. Especially against a very physical Anaheim squad.
Johnny Hockey is making this American very proud, step aside Canadians, there’s a new wave of players taking over this great sport of hockey 😉
