Kansas City Chiefs vs New England Patriots Preview 9-7-17
Don’t look now, but this might be the most talented Chiefs team that head coach Andy Reid has assembled. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill is a triple threat: rushing, receiving and returning. The defense under coordinator Bob Sutton finished strong again, allowing only 19 points per game. In all three years before that, Sutton’s defense allowed 21, 18 and 17 points per game.
Suton now has seven years as a coordinator, and his teams have five top-10 rankings in points allowed. And have never allowed more than 22 points per game in a season. Those numbers are even more impressive when you consider that with Kansas City has gone up against Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers, and with the Jets having to play Tom Brady twice a year.
Sutton’s defenses have allowed more than 5.2 yards per play in only two of his seven years.
This team thrives on turnovers and defense. Sutton will see to it that there’s no let up in either department, and Hill gives the offense an added dimension.
Quarterback Alex Smith was 19-31 SU before hooking up with Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. Since then, he’s 61-29-1 SU, and Smith has 36 turnovers in the last 63 games. As long as he continues to protect the ball, Kansas City will continue to win. The Andy Reid/Alex Smith combo is 3-7 SU and 4-6 ATS vs. Denver and Indianapolis, and 39-17 SU and 32-24 ATS vs. everyone else.
Kansas City Chiefs vs New England Patriots Picks 9-7-17
Head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady get all the accolades for this team, and rightly so. But the guys who get my attention are defensive coordinator Matt Patrica and offensive line coordinator Dante Scarnecchia.
Since taking over the coordinator position in 2012, Patricia’s defenses have ranked in the top-10 in points allowed every single year. And they have ranked in the top 10 in yards per play allowed each of the last three years.
Scarnecchia retired after the 2013 season. At that time, New England was tied for 1st in rushing touchdowns and ranked 8th in rushing yards, 6th in rushing first downs, and 11th in sacks allowed. All those numbers deteriorated in Scarnecchia’s absence, with New England ranking last in the league in 2015 in rushing yards. Tied for 20th in rushing first downs, and tied for 16th in sacks allowed.
Scarnecchia was lured back from retirement last year, and New England ended the season tied for 4th in rushing touchdowns, ranked 12th in rushing yards, 6th in rushing first downs, and tied 5th in sacks allowed.
Yes, Brady and Belichick are the best of all time, but it sure helps when you have assistant coaches like Patricia and Scarnecchia.
