March 18th 2015 and here at Pucking Hockey we have a NHL hockey prediction tonight between the LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks. Who will win tonight in the NHL?
The Freeway Faceoff Battle
When the Anaheim Ducks score a goal, they usually score more in a single game. It’s rare we see them get shutout or only score one goal per game. Quite impressive, but am I surprised? Not really, the Ducks will be a threat in the playoffs this season.
However, Anaheim has been 11% on the power play at home since the All-Star break for one of the NHL’s worst marks. The Ducks are 3 for 33 overall in their last 16 games. That’s something the Ducks need to work on if they want to have a deep playoff run and in order to be the LA Kings tonight.
The upside out of scoring goals 5 on 5. John Gibson made 20 saves in his first appearance in this rivalry in the last match-up for Anaheim. Gibson has started the Ducks’ last three games, and has yielded two goals or fewer in six of his previous seven starts.
Gibson is 11-6 so far this NHL season while supporting a .919 save percentage and 2.51 goals against.
LA Kings Barely Squeezing Into The Playoffs, Again
Like head coach Sutter said, he likes his team being in this position. Do you blame him? The Kings have won 2 Stanley Cups in the past 3 years while barely making the playoffs.
The Kings currently sit 3rd in the Pacific Division but they have Calgary right behind them with 81 points, the same amount the Kings currently have. This in my opinion is a big game for LA. They need to start building a cushion for themselves and it starts tonight now that they are back in the playoff picture.
Goaltender Jonathan Quick is 13-3-1 with a 1.67 goals-against average in his last 17 starts. However, he has allowed nine goals in three match-ups with the Ducks. Ouch.
Quick is currently 30-18 supporting a .916 save percentage and 2.28 goal against average. About the norm for Quick in the regular season.
NHL Hockey Prediction For Tonight
The Kings have not been well on the road going 12-14 this season, and this is 1 of 9 on the road for the remainder of their 13 games for the season. 7 of those games on the road are playoff contending teams. These road trips will either make or break the Kings for their playoff chances.
I expect the Kings, to be the Kings, and play a 2 man fore-check pinning the Ducks in their own zone. The Kings play this forecheck very well as all 4 lines are very effective with this system. However, Jonathan Quick needs to start having MVP like performance from now and to the end of the season if the Kings want to make the 2015 playoffs.
The Ducks have taken 4 of 5 this season against the Kings, but like I said, the Kings need this win more than the Ducks and Darryl Sutter will have this team ready to go.
