NHL Starting Goalies Tonight 1/01/16
- Colorado Avalanche -> Semyon Varlamov
Varlamov is coming off a 19-save, 5-3 win over Nashville on Friday. Despite that mediocre performance, Varlamov has a three-game winning streak going at the moment. He has also not lost in regulation time in seven starts.
Semyon is 11-4 with a 1.93 goals against average in his career vs the Blackhawks.
- Chicago Blackhawks -> Corey Crawford
Crawford has been on fire as of late. He has won four straight starts and now sports a 22-10-2 record, a 2.19 goals against average and a .927 save percentage with six shutouts on the season.
Crawford is 14-6 with a 1.55 goals against average at home, while vs Colorado he is 4-11 with a 3.02 goals against average in his career.
Colorado Avalanche Preview
Colorado ranks 5th in scoring, putting up 2.9 goals per game, while converting on 21.8% of their power play chances, which is also 5th in the league. On defense they need some help as they are 23rd in goals allowed at 2.8 goals per game and 22nd in penalty kill 79.3%.
The Central is the only division with four teams at the 50-point mark as Colorado tries to make up ground in arguably the league’s strongest group.
Semyon Varlamov allowed at least three goals for the fifth time in his last seven starts, though, and has a 3.42 goals against average in that span. He had a 1.24 goals against average while winning his previous eight starts against Chicago before the New Year’s Eve defeat
Chicago Blackhawks Preview
The Blackhawks rank 8th overall in scoring, potting 2.8 goals per game, while converting on 22.5% of their power play chances, which is 3rd. On the defensive end of the ice they are solid as well, ranking 5th in goals allowed at 2.3 gpg and 10th in penalty kill at 81.7%
Crawford lost his only start against Colorado this season 3-0 on Dec. 15 and has dropped his last three against the Avalanche. He wasn’t in net when Toews scored in overtime to beat Colorado 4-3 on Dec. 31, snapping Chicago’s four-game losing streak in the series.
