Flyers vs Islanders Preview
I’s been a while since the Philadelphia Flyers have score more than 2 goals in a single game. To make matters worse they will face an Islanders team that managed to score 3 goals in a 7 minute span last night against the Penguins.
The Islanders were out-shot 42-25, but made the most of their seven third-period shots to earn a win against the Metropolitan-leading Penguins. They basically took advantage of a weak Penguins defense and a back-up goaltender.
Tonight the Islanders return home as they play host to the Flyers where Philly has won seven straight and 14 of 15 on Long Island. But none of this means a thing because the Flyers – being nice – are a pucking disaster on offense.
For once though – and this is surprising – their defense and goaltending has been spectacular. Steve Mason has a 2.17 GAA and a .930 save percentage over his first six starts and if it wasn’t for him, the Flyers would have been blown out of many games. Their penalty kill has also been decent at an 81.6% success rate, allowing seven goals on 38 attempts, but it’s still the same old Flyers, never learning to stay out of the box.
I sat down the other night and finally checked out ESPN’s 30 for 30, which was the John Spano edition. I’ve been a hockey fan my whole life – 20 years – and never knew this happened to Long Island. Regardless, despite their struggles over the years, the Islanders are back.
They’re young, fast and compete every night. John Tavares….need I say more? It’s just a matter of time until the NHL starts mentioning his name every time they mention Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
The one problem I have with the Islanders though, is their goaltending. If it weren’t for their goaltending issues I believe they would have made a deep playoff run last season.
Good news though? I hear Ryan Miller is looking to get out of Buffalo……
Flyers vs Islanders prediction
This game comes down to common sense for me. The Flyers have been a mess and they have showed NO signs of improving. They did get their 2nd win of the season Thursday night BUT they played a banged up Rangers team that are just as bad as them.
It kills me to do this considering I am a Flyers fan, but I’m backing the Islanders tonight. The odds are -115 at the moment and it’s only because they played an emotional game last night. It may not be an easy win for the Islanders and I expect a low scoring game so keep these picks small.
New York Islanders -115 to win $100
UNDER 5.5 to win $100
