Florida Panthers vs Washington Capitals, February 2nd 2016.
NHL Starting Goalies
- Florida Panthers -> Roberto Luongo
Roberto Luongo turned away all 12 of the shots he faced during the first half of the All-Star Game final. Make that 20 of 22 saves for Luongo, who started both games for the Atlantic and never trailed during his 20 minutes of work. Mighty impressive considering the caliber of players on the ice. Or lack of talent played…
- Washington Capitals -> Philipp Grubauer
Grubauer stopped all 11 shots that he faced after replacing Braden Holtby in the Capitals loss to the Ranges on January 17th. Grubauer has not played a ton of games this season, but has been great when call upon. Grubauer enters play at 5-3-1 with a 2.12 GAA and .925 SV% in eight starts and three relief appearances. He has gone 1-1-0 with a 1.99 GAA and .923 SV% in two games vs. the Panthers this season.
Panthers vs Capitals Preview
Wherever Jagr goes, the offense picks up and that’s exactly what’s happening in Florida. The Cats rank 12th overall potting 2.7 goals per game. However their power play chances have struggled, which makes no sense. Or does it? They rank 27th only converting on 16% of their PP chances.
Thanks to a solid defense and much better netminder between the pipes, Roberto Luongo is leading his team 1st overall in goals allowed. Only allowing 2.2 goals per game and most of the time less than that. They also rank 8th in the penalty killing department only allowing the opposition to score 16.8% of their power play chances. Ranking 2nd in the NHL.
The Caps have been a strong offensive team this year as they come in ranked tops in scoring, putting up 3.3 gpg, and tops in power play conversions, converting on 26.8% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice the numbers have very strong as well as they rank 2nd in the league in goals allowed, giving up just 2.2 gpg, while allowing teams to convert on 15.4% % of their power play chances, which is 2nd in the league.
I don’t blame Ovechkin for not “wanting” to play in the All Star game. Apparently he has an injury, and for that the NHL has suspended him for one game for not participating. Ovechkin does what he wants, he doesn’t allow people to take advantage of him.
So considering he will not be playing it won’t make that big of a difference if they happen to lose tonight. They rank at the top of the scoring chart, potting 3.3 goals per game and most of the time more.
What stands out the most is the play of Braden Holtby and this Capitals defense. Barry Trotz found the perfect team that fits his perfect system. If the Capitals don’t roll through the playoffs hoisting the Stanley Cup I will be shocked. Very shocked. Ranking 2nd in the league in goals allowed, giving up just 2.2 goals per game, while allowing teams to convert on 15.4% % of their power play chances, which also ranks 2nd overall in the “chel”.
