Below is a list of free agents that I believe the Flyers should sign if they really want to win the Stanley Cup this season. I mean after all, they keep preaching they want to win NOW! (Been hearing this the past 5 seasons)
Bryan McCabe – Veteran defensemen
McCabe can still put up 40 points per season and can lead any team’s defense with his experience but trying to fit him into the Flyers roster could be a bit tricky. The only way the Flyers would really need to sign him is if Pronger goes on the IR, which looks like is the best option come game 1.
Pronger is once again missing another training camp for the Flyers and already told the media he will not be ready for the start of the season, sound familiar Philly?
With how the Flyers fell apart without Pronger on the ice last season, it’s a clear wakeup call that they need to sign McCabe now before it’s too late.
Ray Emery – Starting goaltender
Last year as you may already know, the Anaheim Ducks scooped up Emery and if it wasn’t for him going 7-2 going into the playoffs, the Ducks would have been on the outside looking in. The only problem is his injuries. And as of now the Flyers have Sergei Bobrovsky backing up Ilya Bryzgalov.
The only reason why the Flyers should sign Ray Emery to back up Bryzgalov is if they come across a great offer for trading Bobrovsky. The Flyers still need a top line forward if they want the cup “now” and trading Bobrovsky would get them that top line forward. But who backs up Bryzgalov?
With Johan Backlund becoming a bust with the Phantoms, all fingers point to Ray Emery coming back to Philly, but as a backup this time around. This only means fewer injuries or none at all.
John Madden – Experienced Penalty Killer
With the loss of Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Darroll Powe the Flyers are going to find themselves scrambling in the PK department for the first time in a long time. Of the remaining players, Claude Giroux and Blair Betts are the only ones who saw much PK time.
Who steps up during training camp when it comes to the penalty kill? Brayden Schenn is scouted as the multi-tool guy who can play that role but if he doesn’t step up and same goes to Scott Hartnell the Flyers are going to put a lot of pressure on Bryzgalov throughout the season, only burning him out come playoff time.
At the right price Madden would make a good fit on this depleted Flyers PK and at the same time taking Jody Shelley’s spot and adding a boost to the fourth line and the PK which was lost with Darroll Powe.
Chris Drury or Sergei Samsonov – Experienced Centers
Once again the Flyers keep preaching they want the cup now, well then they need to sign an experienced center now to fill the 3rd line.
Chris Drury brings leadership and experience to an already somewhat experienced Flyers team but at the same time can help out developing young players like Brayden Shenn and Sean Couturier.
People forget the American born’s clutch contributions to Buffalo and Colorado that made him a fan favorite. He may find himself a 3rd line center but that would be perfect for a team that wants the cup “now”.
Samsonov may not attract other team’s defense, leaving space for players like Briere and Giroux to set up shop, but he can contribute at least 15 goals to this teams stats. But the only way if the Flyers even consider him is if Brayden Shenn does not make the team, and if I know how Holmgren works. No matter what the outcome he is going to play Shenn just because he traded the face of the franchise Mike Richards.
Well there you have it, my top free agents that need to be signed if the Flyers want the cup “now”. I do believe they have a good team but not a Stanley Cup contending team right now, and guys like Pronger, Timonen and Briere are not getting any younger to help this young team win a cup.
