Detroit Red Wings vs Anaheim Ducks Hockey Prediction Tonight 1-4-17
It’s been a while since Steve Ott registered a point on the power play. He has 28 power play goals in his NHL career, but the last point came in 2013-14. In which he played for the Buffalo Sabres. And back in 2009-10 Ott had a career-high 8 power play goals in Dallas.
Steve Ott Gets the PP Call-up
Starting tonight, Steve Ott goes back on the power play as the Detroit Red Wings head to Anaheim. Detroit owns the 30th worst power play percentage of 11.7%. And on the road, they are 2 for 53. Since their last road power play goal back in October 19th 2016, they have had 48 opportunities.
The problem the Wings are having is that they are not retrieving pucks fast enough. They are playing a one and done strategy, at this point you might as well call it a strategy in Detroit. By adding Steve Ott on the power play you are adding a puck retrieval player. Ott has a penalty killing mindset, and how do you succeed on the penalty kill? By retrieving pucks. Ott should be able to help the power play and in large increase puck possession which will generate more chances in the offensive zone.
Ott replaced Riley Sheahan on the unit with Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Tatar, Anthony Mantha and Niklas Kronwall.
Defense, What’s That?
Anaheim also has an issue, a big issue, they are working on. Lately their defensive core has been exposed. In their last game, they allowed 55 shots to the Flyers. They did win the game, but if it were not for John Gibson, they would have been blown to of the arena.
Head coach Randy Caryle pointed out that he wants his team to use good positional defending, and not always looking to rely on a hit. After being coached by Bruce Boudreau I expected the Ducks to continue a hit first mentality on defense. However, with Boudreau gone, it’s obvious Caryle’s defensive approach has not been working for the most part of the season. Much like the Red Wings, just on defense, the Ducks are not retrieving pucks fast enough and 45-second shifts turn into 9-second shifts.
As for the Ducks power play they currently rank 2nd overall. Last season their power play was first overall at 23% Columbus ranks first. It’s apparent Ryan Getzlaf may not be in the lineup tonight. He is nursing a lower injury and is listed as day to day. He showed up at practice today in much better condition.
Starting Goalies Tonight
- Detroit Red Wings
Petr Mrazek gets the call tonight as Jimmy Howard is still out with an injury. Mrazek comes into this game 9-8-3 on the year. While supporting a .896 save percentage.
- Anaheim Ducks
John Gibson starts between the iron tonight at home. He is 13-9-7 while supporting a .911 save percentage so far this season.
Detroit Red Wings vs Anaheim Ducks Prediction Tonight 1-4-17
The Red Wings do have lethal players on the power play. Henrik Zetterberg, Gustav Nyquist, Thomas Vanek, Tomas Tatar, Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantah. With the addition of Steve Ott, I expect more open ice for his line mates. Ott brings a strong game to the table who also possess the puck a lot. Which will allow the players mentioned above to find more space on the ice. And allow them to generate more scoring chances.
Of all the years, I have been playing and observing hockey, I noticed teams can fix their power play in a shorter period of time than a team can fix their defensive side of the game. I still expect the Ducks to give up many chances, especially to a team who is desperate for a win. In addition, this road trip for Detroit is going to be very crucial for their chances into the playoffs. They will most likely not get in, but that does not mean they will not steal a victory in Anaheim tonight.
