St. Louis Blues vs Tampa Bay Lightning Free NHL Pick
February 12, 2015 7:30 PM EDT
Here is another big match-up for both the St. Louis Blues and the Tampa Bay Lightning, but even more so for goaltender Brian Elliott. Allowing 11 goals in 2 consecutive games is not the Brian Elliott we know, but at the end of the day we are all human. We are not robots with on-off switches, and neither are professional athletes. They too have bad days, just like the rest of us.
Tonight I am expecting Elliott to bounce back as he has proven to do throughout his career. Elliott has beaten the Lighting in his first start against them this season.
Looking at the other end of the ice, the Tampa Bay Lightning haven’t been so hot as of late either, after starting the season as a dynasty hockey team. However, this is Tampa, and they always start the season hot, hitting some trouble in the 2nd half of the season. Currently on a loss-win situation since February 2, this is not the Lighting team we are used to.
If history repeats itself, they are due for 5 goals tonight. They went 1 goal, 5 goals, 2 goals, 5 goals, and 2 goals in their last 5 games. As mentioned before: loss, win, loss, win, loss.
Tampa sits atop the Atlantic division and first in the Eastern Conference, and they should finish in the top 3 of the division. It seems nearly impossible for them to end up in a Wild Card position, but it could happen. Their only opponent in the division that could bump them down to the Wild Card are the Boston Bruins, currently sitting with 63 points, and it would be a pretty long stretch to find them with a top 3 finish in the division. Tampa, however, does have Detroit and Montreal right up their asses.
St. Louis is also in a similar position, and it is unlikely they will end up in the Wild Card position. In my opinion, this match-up comes down to both Brian Elliott and Ben Bishop getting back on track, more so Elliott.
With both teams being top scoring in the league, it’s hard for me to back the under 5.5, especially with odds of -135. Therefore I am going to take a shot with the Blues, solely because Elliott needs this game more at the moment.
Brian Elliott will be back in net after Jake Allen stopped 25 shots against the Coyotes. Elliott made 30 saves in the first meeting with the Lightning before allowing seven goals while dropping his next two starts.
Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop stopped 16 shots against his former team, beginning a three-start stretch, during which he has just an .855 save percentage.
St. Louis Blues +101 (risking $100 to win $101)
