Today’s NHL Picks: Pucking Hockey Predictions 10-17-17
Toronto Maple Leafs vs Washington Capitals Pick
It’s a ‘rematch’, and it’s not looking good for Washington. Yes, they are lighting up the scoreboard, but their struggling defense showed in an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Philly last week. Toronto comes in off of a 4-3 victory in Montreal, something that has not happened in the previous 14 games.
Like the Capitals, the Maple Leafs are also lighting up the scoreboard; however, they are allowing 3.8 goals per game. With their run and gun style of hockey, it was inevitable that their defense was going to crumble. Which has left goaltender Frederik Andersen out to dry on several occasions, if not the whole game.
Washington comes into this game losing three of their previous four and now sit at 3-2-1. In the offseason, this defense lost Karl Alzner, Nate Schmidt and Kevin Shattenkirk, and now are missing Matt Niskanen to a hand injury at least until November. Which has led to them allowing at least eight more shots per game than last season.
It will be Braden Holtby vs. Frederik Andersen tonight. For current and career numbers refer here.
I’ve like Toronto since the acquired Auston Matthews. And there’s no reason to stop now, especially since they are a road underdog sitting at +130. Their run and gun style should obliterate that Capitals defense tonight.
- Toronto Maple Leafs +130
Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers Pick
It was inevitable that the Rangers were going to fall apart this season, didn’t expect it to be this soon though. They are last in the Eastern Conference with an awful record of 1-5-0, their worst start since 1980. And now come into this game having to face the Penguins who have won three of four whiling owning the Rangers over the past several years.
Pittsburgh struggled in the early going, and in my opinion, it was due to Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel not shooting the puck as much. I’ve also noticed that Malkin has been less fancy this season which hasn’t helped both him and linemate, Phil Kessel, as they only have two goals in six games.
For New York, their main problem is not playing 60 minutes of hockey. Over this past weekend, they dominated New Jersey in the first period, only to fall 3-2 through the next 40 minutes. They came, and they went.
It will be Matt Murray vs. Henrik Lundqvist tonight, refer here for career numbers.
Can I really bet against the Penguins vs. a struggling Rags team? Pittsburgh sits at -110 on the road, yeah, give me them at that price.
- Pittsburgh Penguins -110
Vancouver Canucks vs Ottawa Senators Pick
Not sure why I’m writing about this game.
I haven’t followed Vancouver this season, as a matter of fact, not for at least 5+ seasons now. Why? They purely suck at hockey, not as bad as Arizona, but close to it.
Ottawa picked up where they left off last season nearly advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals, and they’ve been doing it without Erik Karlsson. Well, he’s making his season debut tonight, and the Sens are a -175 home favorite tonight.
I don’t bet these type of odds; however, there’s no reason the Senators cannot win tonight. For tonight’s goaltender matchup, refer here.
- Ottawa Senators -1.5
Columbus Blue Jackets vs Winnipeg Jets Pick
Did you know Sergei Bobrovsky is 2-5 with a .872 save percentage vs. Winnipeg in his career? While allowing 4.81 goals per game? I mean, if it was one game, sure he gets a pass. But with those numbers through 7 games!?
Steve Mason gets the call tonight for Winnipeg. He’s been a mental case thus far into the season and wait until you see his career numbers here.
- Over 6
