Today’s NHL Picks: Pucking Hockey Predictions 10-9-17
Chicago Blackhawks vs Toronto Maple Leafs Pick
Goals, goals, goals. Wins, wins, wins. Both the Blackhawks and Maple Leafs are 2-0, and each has scored 15 goals. The only difference is that Chicago has only allowed two goals thus far, while Toronto has given up seven.
In net for Chicago, it will be Anton Forsberg.
Forsberg was acquired along with Brandon Saad in the trade that sent Artemi Panarin to the Blue Jackets this past summer. Tonight will be his Blackhawks debut, and he has had a hard time in his young NHL career. In 10 career appearances, Forsberg has a 4.02 GAA and .879 SV% but was an impressive 27-17-2 with a 2.28 GAA and .926 SV% in the AHL last year.
In net for Toronto, it will be Frederik Andersen. Andersen surrendered five goals on 35 shots in the Maple Leafs’ 8-5 win over the Rangers on Saturday. It wasn’t a tremendous statistical outing for Andersen, who has now posted a 3.50 GAA and .903 SV% in two starts, but he has received a whopping 15 goals in support so far.
Toronto likes to play an up-tempo, free-wheeling game so Andersen may be under siege a lot this season but should walk away victorious more often than not.
Andrei Vaseilevsky goes for Tampa, as he’s 2-0 versus Chicago in his career, however, Vas is supporting a .908 save percentage and a horrific 3.05 goals against average.
Chicago’s clearly out for redemption after last season and clearly the Leafs’ know how to fly up and down the ice finding the back of the net. Though most would think to bet against the Hawks due to a ‘garbage’ goaltender in between the pipes, it’s not always the case as the Hawks always seem to make average players, shine, and anytime you can get Chicago at +135, you take it.
- Chicago +135
Washington Capitals vs Tampa Bay Lightning Pick
Last season everyone predicted the Lightning on winning the Stanley Cup. Injuries caused a lot of people to lose money. I wasn’t one of them. However, I expect them to go far this season. But, so far, I am having my doubts.
They have not impressed me, and their style has dried up. Along with barely defeating the lonely Panthers last week then ended up losing to them the very next day in a home and home stand.
They are scoring goals at will, eight to be exact. But they are also allowing goals, 8.
I’m not a big believer in ‘looking ahead of the schedule’ but it does happen in hockey. And with the Caps putting out Philipp Grubauer tonight over Braden Holtby, it seems to be the case.
Grubauer has been one of the most reliable backups in the NHL over the years and comes into 2017-18 having gone 13-6-2 with a 2.04 GAA, .926 SV% and three shutouts last season. Grubauer’s first start will come against a Tampa Bay team that is playing for the third time in four days and had two entirely different results in their first two contests.
Also, Grubauer is 3-0, .935 SV% and 2.09 GAA versus the Lightning in his career. Take the Capitals, especially sitting at +105
- Washington +105
