Yesterday the L.A. Kings fired head coach Terry Murray, and for now, assistant coach John Stevens has stepped in as the interim coach. Ok, I could have left this out, the whole hockey world knows who was fired and who stepped in, puck me!
Though, was this the right move by Kings GM Dean Lombardi?
Me personally, it was his only choice but what I don’t think Lombardi did was give his team a chance to build chemistry. They added many new players in the offseason and the expectations were so high, everyone expected the Kings to be one of the dominate in the West, including myself.
Yes I have the Kings finishing first in the West, puck me again!
Now as the season rolled on, we all started noticing the Kings didn’t have the chemistry everyone thought they would have, including my pucking self! The Kings have 30 points and sit 12 in the West, but looking at the standings you can clearly see they are only one game out of the playoffs. It’s once again another very tight Western Conference.
Now what’s Lombardi expecting from this point on?
I don’t see the Kings getting the boost they think they will get with a guy like John Stevens behind the bench. As recent history proves, this guy is just too soft for the NHL. He does not get in the players faces, or show any emotion when it’s needed. Trust me I know, I had to sit and watch every Flyers game with this guy as the head coach.
If I had a quarter for every time I screamed “Fire Stevens”! I would simply be a millionaire, needless to say they Flyers did the right thing and fired John Stevens, and ultimately made it to the Stanley Cup Finals that year.
I’m not saying the Kings won’t wake up and play good hockey, but don’t expect too much with Stevens as the main guy in LA, for too long of a period of time, just short term.
As you also know, Dean Lombardi also ripped his players apart after firing Murray. This in my opinion was very much needed, but at the same time, who is to say this team is a solid team in the West? They haven’t proved anything yet to us fans, and with that said can’t we blame Lombardi for all of this? He’s the one who brought in these players, no?!
I think what’s going to spark this team was Lombardi ripping his players apart, not the coach firing. In time, even if the Kings do pick it up, the true John Stevens will start to show and before you know it, Randy Carlyle may be behind this bench as the main man in LA.
