The New Jersey Devils had an incredible season and an incredible playoff run. They managed to stay under the radar all season long while I kept telling everybody to watch out for them.
They managed to survive a quarterfinals game 7 OT, a semifinals divisional rival, then a Eastern Conference battle with their “big” brothers.
I’ve always said if Zach Parise and the Devils make it to the Stanley Cup, I would expect Parise to resign in Jersey, but I have changed my mind and for the final time.
The main reason comes down to money. The New Jersey Devils are more then $200 million in debt and they owe $77 million this summer. That’s a very BIG chunk of change especially when they are trying to resign their captain. A captain who could receive a BIG payday with a number of teams.
The upside though is, due to their recent playoff success the Devils managed to bring in $32.3 million.
The biggest chunk of playoff money came from $26.2 million in postseason ticket sales, according to the newspaper’s review. Concessions brought in another big piece with the Devils selling $3.75 million worth of hot dogs, soda and beer during playoffs. Sponsors kicked in $1.1 million to the Devils’ bottom line during playoffs. Devils merchandise also gave the team an influx of about $1 million million worth of jerseys, T-shirts, and hats. – Nj.com
In my opinion I think between the money the Devils owe and trying to resign Parise will be too much to handle. And what player really want’s to play in a city who owes money, you NEVER know what the future may hold.
Who knows, the Devils may get relocated, is Parise ready to handle that?
Only time will tell, but expect Zach Parise to sign else where, or I could be totally wrong.
