I’ve been receiving emails suggesting I should make a future bet on the Detroit Red Wings winning the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup. Pucking Hockey’s biased opinion
There’s no doubt the Detroit Red Wings are plying excellent and are still finding ways to make the playoffs even while rebuilding after the loss of key players. Pavel Datsyuk is still Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg is still Henrik Zetterberg. And with threats like Justin Abdelkader, Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Johan Franzen, Drew Miller, Darren Helm and Daniel Cleary – they are playing like a deep playoff team.
However you will notice I did not mention any of their goalies, and in today’s game you need a good netminder.
The Red Wings do not have that.
I am very high on American born players (because I am American) especially American goaltending, but Jimmy Howard is not an American goaltender, that I am fond of. Even when he first entered the league, I was not a fan. Ever get that strange feeling that a player just isn’t what he’s touted to be?
Well, Jimmy Howard is my guy.
Injuries also don’t help his case. Since his return from the groin injury he sustained, Howard has gone 1-1-1 with a 3.01 GAA and .904 SV% – those are not Stanley Cup winning numbers. Now of course you can look at his playoffs overall average numbers, they are OK, but even Mac-Andre Fleury supports solid numbers, and look at how brutal he’s been in recent playoff games…
Detroit does currently sit 3rd in their division, but can we agree, they are in the easiest division of the NHL? Outside of Tampa Bay, Montreal and Boston – Detroit is the only other team that are playoff contenders. That’s a total of four teams that have spots to make the playoffs between the division and the wild card spot.
Others team in that division consist of: Florida, Ottawa, Toronto and Buffalo.
There’s an article from CBS Sports showing a chart on potential teams winning the Stanley Cup, but I disagree with their logic. It’s easy to base off of numbers for teams to win the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup, but the fact is, math does not include emotions, player and team fatigue, teams choking and locker room issues.
I expect the Detroit Red Wings, to almost always make the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, but until they find a goaltender that isn’t injury prone, stay consistent, they will not Win the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
That’s my biased opinion.
