Have you ever heard the slogan “Broad Street Bullies”?
Of course you have, almost every hockey fan has heard that slogan once in their life.
How do you think the Flyers got that title?
It’s a very simple answer as a matter of fact, they played like Bullies back in the 70’s which eventually led to back to back Stanley Cups.
So why can’t these “Broad Street Bullies” beat the New Jersey Devils?
Because, they are simply NOT checking and creating space for themselves. What they did so effectively in the quarterfinals has seemed to trail off into another universe, meanwhile Ilya Bryzgalov is back on planet earth and playing his BEST hockey all season.
But wait a second, you said the Flyers rookies are putting up better stats then Mike Richards and Jeff Carter combined all season long? Isn’t that what you clowns reported almost EVERY game in the regular season. That may be true Tim Panaccio and Frank Seravalli but you are “reporters” you should know that stats don’t mean a thing in the playoffs!
Or wait a second, it’s all about the ratings and money right?
I’m going to give it to the Flyers fans straight and be as honest as I can be.
The Flyers will NEVER win a Stanley Cup until they get players like Bobby Clarke and Dave The Hammer Schultz back on this team. They had the next Bobby Clarke in Mike Richards, but apparently he was “drinking” too much. Last I checked, Richards is in the Conference Finals and 8-1 in the playoffs. Last I checked Richards is playing like Bobby Clarke and is on route to leading the Kings to the Stanley Cup.
As for a player like Schultz, well that has never happened, yet.
Mike Richards, sure he had a rough regular season, but the playoffs is where it counts, the only thing that really matters in the end. And from what I have seen, Richards is back to his playoff form and running people over like Bobby Clarke used to do for the Flyers.
MIKE RICHARDS WAS A BIG LOSS TO THIS FLYERS TEAM!
I don’t care how many points Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier or Jakub Voracek had in the regular season because last I checked these guys are NOT doing a thing in the semifinals, where the Flyers choked last season.
What was last season’s excuse? Oh that’s right the goaltending.
Well OK, Ilya Bryzgalov struggled all season long, even in the quarterfinals, but now he is playing GREAT when it really matters and the Flyers are missing that Broad Street Bullies mentality, where Mike Richards brought it every playoff game.
As you can see Mike Richards is missing from this roster and it’s showing, it’s showing at the wrong time but at least I can say I was right from the beginning.
So who steps up and replaces Mike Richards?
Looking at this current roster, Zac Rinaldo is the only option. As a matter of fact, since he was replaced by James Van Riemsdyk the Flyers are 2-4. Interesting little fact there because last I checked since Rinaldo was yanked from the bench, the team seemed to have lost it’s spark. As if there is no one in the locker room sparking up the team before the game. You know, the stuff us as fans never see.
Speaking of James Van Riemsdyk, been saying it since he was drafted, he is overrated. That big waste of body and he still does not know how to use it as a true Broad Street Bully. And to think he will be making over $4 million a year after this summer, sickens me.
How about Wayne Simmonds?
He had a decent regular season, put up some good numbers, although they don’t mean a thing in the playoffs. He also played with an edge, and didn’t take any crap from anybody. OK, well where has that edge been in the semifinals? Getting paid off? Doesn’t care? Can’t handle the pressure?
MONEY MONEY MONEY!
Jakub Voracek, can he be the next Broad Street Bully?
Can’t really pick on Voracek too much here, he has been the only new acquisition playing with heart and the determination to win. Then again he was sent to the Flyers for Jeff Carter, and we all know Carter is a waste of space in the NHL. So Paul Holmgren, you get brownie points for that.
The bottom line to this rant is, if the Flyers don’t start playing like the Broad Street Bullies they will NEVER have another parade down Broad Street. Start hitting the Devils, creating space so you can actually set up a scoring chance and crash the heck out of Martin Brodeur’s crease. This very simple strategy can go a very long way, just look at the 2011 Bruins and the 2012 Kings.
And NO the LA KINGS are NOT the Flyers West, stupidest thing I ever heard these Flyers “reporters” say!
